Wrike Hosts an #HourofCode to Support Computer Science Education Week

Last Friday, Andrew Filev, Wrike CEO and development champion (he was Wrike's first developer, after all!), brought an "Hour of Code" to the people he spends time with every day — Wrike employees. Curious Wrikers joined Andrew to learn the basics of coding a computer game using Code.org's "Hour of Code" online program. What is "Hour of Code"?  As career opportunities in the field of engineering and software development continue to appear at a growing rate, the non-profit Code.org wants everyone, regardless of age, gender, or location, to have the chance to jump on board. "Hour of Code" is a week-long effort to bring the basic principles of engineering to children and adults of any age. They teamed up with Computer Science Education Week and teachers from across the globe to bring the program to over 3 million students in just 5 days. You can see more about their program in this video: Why Wrike Joined the Movement As Wrike's first developer and founding father, Andrew has been passionate about software engineering since he was only 6 years old. After reading about the "Hour of Code" program online, he offered to spend his lunch break teaching curious Wrikers a few basic software engineering principles in one of our bi-weekly "Lunch & Learn" education sessions. Folks from the sales, marketing, and customer success team all joined Andrew in a BYOL (Bring Your Own Laptop) session of introductory coding, errors, and laughter. Keep an eye out for new features developed by our newest software engineers! ;)

Wrike Enterprise: Harnessing the Power of Big Data and Real-Time Collaboration

Today thousands of diverse organizations, including dozens of Fortune 1000 companies, use Wrike to successfully manage their projects and tasks. The beauty of Wrike is that it scales up and down smoothly. In addition to dynamic start-ups that are using the software on the go, there are large enterprises managing thousands of projects in the system. Granted, sending out e-mails and scheduling team meetings every time you want a status report is outdated and unproductive in today’s fast-paced environment. It gets exponentially more difficult for large teams that are spread across several cities or even continents. Those large and often distributed teams struggle on a daily basis with challenges, such as the need to coordinate the efforts of multiple teams, for all-around visibility and for granular control over corporate data security. That is why we introduced a plan that delivers the solutions to all these needs – Wrike Enterprise. Above and beyond your favorite Premium features, Wrike Enterprise brings Big Data into the picture, allowing you to instantly get reports on work progress, along with actionable insights. The Performance Chart can help you estimate a realistic project completion date. The Current Status Chart makes it easy to spot the bottlenecks of your project and the tasks that require immediate action. The Baseline Chart comes in handy for identifying how far ahead of or behind the planned schedule you are. The Work Progress Chart helps you keep a finger on the week-to-week work results of each member of your team. Here's a quick overview of the new features we brought to Wrike Enterprise: Progress Reports as Actionable Infographics We store about a million updates each day, and successfully parse all that historical data to help you run your business more efficiently. "How is our progress looking, compared to the original plan? When should we realistically expect to complete the project? Who completed the most tasks?" Answering these questions requires processing thousands of work activity records. Wrike does it in a blink of an eye for you. The new reporting engine gives out valuable business insights on employee performance, realistic completion dates, critical areas that need a manager’s attention, baseline comparisons, and more -- all in the easily digestible format of infographics. This helps managers spot project bottlenecks instantly and provides stakeholders with highly visual performance updates. Our philosophy has always been "make complex things simple." That's why you don't need to spend time configuring these beautiful reports. They are already pre-configured in Wrike Enterprise, for any project you run. Sharing Made Easy via User Groups If you needed to share a project with five people, you'd probably pick them from a list one-by-one. But what if you need to share a folder with 50 or 500 colleagues? To save time, Wrike Enterprise allows you to organize users into a hierarchical directory with user groups.  You can include employees in multiple work groups by project, department, or any other ad hoc basis, and then share the needed data with the whole group in one click. All Schedules Visible on Custom Calendars Managing a larger team means keeping track of a lot of variables when creating a project schedule.  With the help of the custom calendar, you can keep track of your colleagues' vacations, PTO and extra working days, allowing you to avoid schedule overlaps and build more accurate plans.  Corporate Identity in E-mail Notifications When it comes to your corporate identity, consistency matters. That’s why you can now add your company logo, or any other brand image you see fit, to all work updates sent to your employees from Wrike. Branded e-mail notifications now round out your corporate communications. More Data Security with Extended IT Controls Responding to the needs of our customers with 1,000+ seat deployments, we empowered IT with extended security controls. In Wrike, everything works out of the box the day you start your trial, but when you need more controls, the Enterprise plan gives your IT team options to configure which e-mail domains and app integrations employees can access.  Advanced Permissions Exciting news to share: a long-awaited feature - read-only permissions per folder - is already on its way! We will gradually roll it out in the next couple of weeks. This feature allows Wrike Enterprise customers to select read-only access when they are sharing projects. Wrike's API Out: Connect Wrike with Other Business Software Tools You Use!

We are happy to announce that we’ve just unveiled Wrike’s Development Platform, which opens up an opportunity for you to synchronize all your data between Wrike and other business applications and thus get a step closer to a transparent enterprise. Wrike’s Development Platform allows you to connect project collaboration in Wrike with other software you use, or even build new applications. The platform is a set of API (application programming interface) methods that enable your engineers to integrate Wrike with desktop, Web or mobile tools that you and your team use extensively. “ Some companies already have planned an integration for their business needs. “We’re building an integration that will enable transferring contacts and tasks from BatchBook, a powerful social CRM application, into Wrike. With the data brought together in one spot, the customer relations teams will definitely gain in efficiency while planning follow-ups, tracking leads and closing deals,” says Kurt Milam, VP of Software and Internet Services at Xioup, a fast-growing Web development company. You can explore the API documentation and register your application right now! If you have limited engineering resources in-house and would be interested in hiring a third-party consultancy to help you integrate Wrike project management software with your other applications and automate your business processes, drop a note to our sales team at https://www.wrike.com/contact-sales/. We’ll connect you with one of our development partners.

Wrike Adds Recurring Tasks Feature to All Accounts For Free

Do you have a weekly status meeting? Do you have to regularly create sales reports? Or maybe you issue monthly newsletters? In these and thousands of other cases, you will be pleased with the new recurring tasks feature available in Wrike. Now, when you create or edit a task, you can check a box to turn the task from a one-time event to a recurring event. The recurring tasks feature is great addition to other scheduling options, like customized work days, intraday tasks and task dependencies in Wrike.  Automatic scheduling of recurring tasks will help you reduce time spent on daily planning and result in more realistic plans. Once the “recurring” box is checked in the task edit form, you will see a pop-up dialog that lets you set up the frequency of your task or event. For example, if you want to schedule the design of a weekly newsletter due every Monday, you select the “Weekly” button, set it to reoccur every week and check the box called Monday. Then you set the duration of the task recurrence by entering the start day as next Monday, for instance, and the end day as one month later. After you save the changes to the task, a series of tasks will be added to your Wrike workspace. The tasks will differ by date and title.  A number (starting from 1) will be added to the end of each task title in the series. In our example, we will see  four tasks: “designing weekly newsletter 1,” “designing weekly newsletter 2,” “designing weekly newsletter 3” and “designing weekly newsletter 4” with the corresponding due dates on December 21, December 28, January 4 and January 11. Your recurring tasks are marked up with a special icon in the task list, as well as on the timeline:   When necessary, you can edit the series of tasks by updating the recurrence pattern, or edit an individual task by changing its title, date, description, etc. If you change the due date of an individual task and later update the recurrence pattern, the due date of the individual task will be updated as well. Say you reschedule the task called “designing weekly newsletter4” from January 11 to January 12 and then update the recurrence pattern so that  the task is due each Wednesday, instead of each Monday, the “designing weekly newsletter4” task will be rescheduled for Wednesday, January 13.

The Dream

The Dream

From a simple point of view, Wrike is a combination of some very helpful and innovative features, like the ability to assign tasks in e-mails, to get daily reminders about overdue tasks, to organize tasks in a convenient way, to instantly see what others are doing and so on. But once you start using Wrike you see that there is a great synergistic effect. It’s easy to assign tasks, so you can keep track of more things. It’s easy to organize more things, so you are not lost in 100 tasks to-do lists. You start to plug-in your peers, managers and employees and see that it’s much easier to collaborate with them. In the ideal scenario, everybody around you is using Wrike, you share different folders of tasks with different folders of your peers. But you still get the full picture and easily navigate the network of tasks in the Wrike interface, just like you do it in your mind. Think about organizations: Wrike helps to build companies with absolute transparency. The top manager may drill down to the level of a concrete employee several layers beneath him, see what the person is doing and recognize her efforts. When somebody needs to be in the loop, you just share a project with him and he subscribes to the notifications. When you e-mail something, you are not afraid that it will be forgotten. When you finish a task, you are sure that your colleagues will stay in the loop. The number of reports and status update requests is minimized, saving everybody’s time. And what’s best is that you may easily plug in the plan for your next vacation along with your work projects and make sure that you always see what is important and relevant for YOU. So Wrike is about two things – making collaboration better and making your life simpler. You have more time and energy for more important, creative and fun things in your life. That was our dream when we started Wrike.

The two types of messages are supported: notifications about changes made by other users and system messages. We have also optimized information presented in the notifications and the way you see them.

The new user interface

Thanks to feedback from our first users, Wrike has changed its appearance. Compared to the previous interface, the new one allows you to see the so called folder tree in the left column. All your folders are displayed within their hierarchy. Attention! A distinctive feature of Wrike! Any task or folder can contain, or be included in, several folders. For example, the task "submit to the web 2.0 conference" is included both in the folders "Weekly plans" and "Conferences". The folder "Conferences" is also included in a project "Wrike". Some stuff from the folder "Personal" is in my "Weekly plans" that is not shared with anybody else to avoid having things get mixed up.

Dropbox's Move Reminds Us Teams Must Evolve Beyond Email

With the news that our partners at Dropbox have decided to discontinue their email app Mailbox, I wanted to take a moment to reflect upon the state of our industry as a provider of Work Management and Collaboration Software.  First, let me say that Mailbox was a great email app. A lot of users are going to miss it. It brought swipe gestures and snooze into emails, and a polished user interface. At the time of its launch, these were very overdue additions to the email experience.  That said, it had a major flaw. It wasn’t a technical flaw or even a user experience flaw; Mailbox did everything it was supposed to do. Its flaw was a philosophical one that limited its value for individual business users. Our team at Wrike recently conducted a survey of the pains of workers and compiled the results into our 2015 Work Management Report. Among the interesting findings were that two of the biggest roadblocks to getting work done are “Waiting for Other People” and “Missing Information.” Within these statistics lies the flaw in Mailbox as a solution: You can give email a new paint job, but at the end of the day, it’s still a silo.  The engine for email is an individual engine. Mailbox helped improve personal productivity, and for its users, many of them saw real results. But the biggest pains for workers in 2015 are team pains, and improving the experience of email does not solve those. The best way to improve individual productivity is by enabling team productivity.  At Wrike, we have mobile apps with an Inbox feature not unlike Mailbox. It allows users to easily view new messages, and respond to them with swipe gestures. The fundamental difference is that it sits on a platform that is built around team visibility and collaboration.  When you receive a notification in your Wrike Inbox, you know who on your team can also see that update, and you don’t need to worry about who’s CC'd or fear that you’ll be delaying a project by delaying your response. All the vital information is presented, and previous conversations are clearly organized. In short, it’s more than a new paint job, it’s a whole new paradigm. Mailbox was a great app for its time. But its retirement shows that Dropbox sees what we have seen for nearly a decade: teams hold the key to successful businesses, and improving the way they work together is the fastest way to meeting big goals.  If you were a Mailbox user, I hope you’ll check out what we’re doing at Wrike. We’ve got tools for teams of all sizes, and I’m confident you’ll be impressed by the way we’ve evolved the inbox and the experience of working with your team.

Is There a Way to Make Multiple Project Management 50% More Efficient?

Consulting and e-learning is a multi-project business. One of the major challenges of this business is that you need to keep track of dozens of projects simultaneously. Explore Table View (Beta) for Fast Task Editing

Do you sometimes have to review massive task lists? Or edit many tasks at once in Wrike project management software? If so, you’ll be pleased with the beta release of the new table view for tasks.   The table view is a task management tool that saves you time on adding, reviewing and editing many tasks at once. Compared with the perfectly visualized list view that helps you focus on a specific task, the table view is a compact version adjusted to working with a long list of tasks.   The table view simplifies the way project information is displayed. Thus, it easily accommodates more tasks on one screen. The table view aggregates subfolders and tasks in a single hierarchy and lets you quickly switch between items with the help of your keyboard. You can move between tasks and details by hitting the arrow keys, and edit the most important task information by hitting “enter.” By the most important task information, we mean the task’s title, start date, end date, status and responsible parties.  The table view becomes extremely handy if you need to edit a lot of tasks. For example, when you need to mark several tasks completed, or quickly create project that includes many tasks, or reschedule numerous tasks, the table view is what you need!    We value the needs of our customers most of all and always listen to what you have to suggest. Since the table view is still in beta, it would be great to hear your ideas on how we can make this feature even better.   P.S. As of today, the table view doesn’t display backlogged tasks. That’s a known issue, and our designers are working on creating layout that would work well with all tasks (both backlogged and planned) and work side-by-side with the timeline at the same time.

Meet the Full Set of Task Dependencies

Project management is unthinkable without milestones and dependencies. Even if you occasionally plan tasks on the Gantt chart, these tools help you keep your product releases, website launches, editorial calendars, advertising campaigns and many other important activities on track and on time. Project management is unthinkable without milestones and dependencies. Even if you occasionally plan tasks on the Gantt chart, these tools help you keep your product releases, website launches, editorial calendars, advertising campaigns and many other important activities on track and on time.   Creating "finish-to-start" dependencies on the Timeline (Gantt chart) has been a matter of a mouse move in Wrike for quite some time now. You simply hover on a predecessor task and drag the arrow from its right side to the left side of the successor.   Recently, many of our customers started asking for the ability to build more complex relationships between tasks in the same quick and easy manner. We've accepted the challenge, and starting today, Wrike became even more professional, allowing you to create all possible dependencies between your tasks! New Types of Task Dependencies  Start-to-start (B can't start before A starts) If you plan to publish some article with images, there is no use  in making visuals unless you start writing. Here the start-to-start dependency will work the best for you. Join the left sides of "write article" and "make pictures" tasks with an arrow, and it is set!    It's not necessary for these tasks to start at the same time. Thus, if needed, you can easily move the second task forward this way, creating a task date constraint. Finish-to-finish (B can't finish before A is finished)   If captions are the finishing touch on your banner, use the finish-to-finish dependency. You can instantly create it by joining the tasks' right sides with an arrow. Start-to-finish (B can't finish before A starts) This dependency type is often used for just-in-time scheduling. For example, you need to transfer paper from the warehouse to the printers in order for printing to start. However, the printers have limited storage capacity and you do not want the paper to arrive until it is needed ('just in time'), so the start of printing drives the delivery of paper. If the start of printing changes for some reason, so will the end date for getting paper to the printers.    Probably, you already know how to set up this type of relationship. Hover on the left side of the "start printing" task and move the mouse to the right of the "deliver paper" one.    What dependencies are the most desired for your projects? Are any of them completely new for your team?
