What does a Scrum master do?

First, let’s look at what a Scrum master typically does and what their responsibilities include on a Scrum team.

A Scrum master is often referred to as a servant leadership position. This means that the most effective Scrum masters view their role as one that serves the best interests of their teammates above their own. Scrum masters are seen as the facilitators of the project, and their responsibilities typically include:

What are the key Scrum master skills?

The cornerstone of Agile project management and all of its frameworks is flexibility — being able to adapt to change and roll with the punches of managing a dynamic project is what makes Agile so popular. In Scrum, a Scrum master must be comfortable with change and able to act quickly in changing environments.

A key characteristic of Scrum masters is that they work by servant leadership. This means they have to be attuned to what their teammates need for success and empathize with any issues or struggles they may be having.

Scrum teams work well because they can collaborate seamlessly through changing conditions, deadlines, and goals. Scrum masters must set a good example for the rest of the team by ensuring collaboration is their top priority.

In a constantly changing environment, the ability to think and act quickly to solve any challenges is one of the most crucial Scrum master skills. They should be confident in their knowledge of Scrum principles and stay calm and collected when a problem arises.

Scrum masters are in charge of facilitating many of the events that take place in a Scrum sprint, such as daily stand-up meetings. They need to be organized, clear-headed, and able to coordinate their team and resources to ensure success.
