Swearing in the Workplace: Announcing Part 1 of Wrike's 2016 Work Management Survey

Some people say sitting is the new smoking, others would say it's actually... swearing. In a time where working from home is common, polos and khakis are replacing suits and ties, and cursing like a sailor is seen as an expression of passion for your work, the fine line between work and home grows thinner and thinner.  We decided to dive into the world of informal communication in the office and see how thin that line actually is. We ran a survey across 1,542 workers addressing language and informality in the workplace. Turns out, the majority of people do swear in the workplace (57%), however 41% feel that swearing is too casual and unprofessional. Here are some other findings from our survey: 49% say they occasionally swear in the workplace, while 25% say they swear daily  More women (60%) admitted to swearing than men (55%), however men who do swear in the office do it at a higher frequency than women 94% say they swear more in face-to-face conversations vs. email or online communication 66% say they are more likely to swear if their boss swears, while 25% report "it doesn't matter" 33% would not consider accepting a position in an organization in which swearing is strictly banned Check out the complete findings from part one of our 2016 Work Management Survey: What are your thoughts on swearing in the workplace? 19 Business Resolution Suggestions to Focus Your Company in 2016

The end of the year is just days away, and our belief is that every year should be better than the last. To help you think about what you can focus on improving for your business in 2016, we asked business leaders to share their thoughts on the most important resolutions companies should be making for the coming year. And remember — in business as in life — every day is a chance to do better. Even if you don't focus on these business resolutions until June, that is still a great time to improve your company. Now see what these business leaders suggest you focus on in 2016: Build a road map “Businesses should identify specific opportunities for growth (rolling out a new product, exploring new markets, or making acquisitions) and [inlinetweet prefix="" tweeter="" suffix="—via @Wrike"]build a road map to make it happen.[/inlinetweet]” —Aleks Peterson, Technology Analyst, TechnologyAdvice Mobile accessibility “Mobile vs. Desktop disparity and smartphone penetration has deepened in 2015 at a pace that is showing overnight impact in a lot of industries. Companies need to speed up work to accommodate shifting dynamics in consumer trends, and accordingly bring about change in their business processes & people training.” —Annkur P Agarwal, CEO, Pricebaba “Make sure mobile is a big focus. We see a large share of our visits coming from mobile devices. On top of that, Google's search ranking algorithm now penalizes sites for not being mobile optimized. For us, this largely means optimizing our website. For others, it may mean the same, or could mean developing an app, advertising on mobile devices, or even offering mobile specific services. It's hard to say exactly how the shift to mobile devices will affect your business, but know that it definitely will. I suggest analyzing how mobile is currently impacting your business, what mobile trends you’re seeing, and developing a strategy to capitalize on it.” —Will von Bernuth, Co-Founder, Block Island Organics Know why you do what you do “Companies need to set clear priorities and make them accessible and understandable, so they can maximize the return on each hour they invest into their business. Focusing on what truly matters to fuel the growth and sustainability of your company is vital for success in 2016.” —Anthony Pezzotti, Co-Founder, Knowzo.com “Be strategic and take time to consider why you're doing the things you are and try to make contemplative pause a habit. Making lists and checking off 'to-dos' might make you feel productive, but you should be wary if it starts to feel rote. Deeper and more meaningful course correction might be needed to ensure you're maximizing the return on your invested effort.” —Chris Ricci, Indigenous Software Communicate with customers “Pick a platform and use it to address your consumer's most burning questions. Any platform such as a blog, YouTube channel, advertorials, communities, podcasts, or social media sites will work. If you can educate your customers on your industry, you will earn their trust and their business. This will not only help build brand awareness, but directly impact your bottom line in a positive way." —Mack Dudayev, CEO, InsureChance, Inc. “I have found it difficult to stay as close to our end users as I once could. To combat this, I man our customer support chat for 1 hour every day, 7 days a week. This daily first-hand interaction with our users allows me to stay grounded in our customer's logic; it has been instrumental in guiding our product development strategy. I can confidently explain to our engineers why a feature is important, as well as provide data to back it up. I have a mantra: [inlinetweet prefix="" tweeter="" suffix="—via @Wrike"]Listen to your customers, or you will have none.[/inlinetweet]” —Bryan Clayton, CEO, Greenpal Work smarter “Businesses should focus on improving team collaboration — get everyone plugged into the same assets, working toward a shared set of goals with clear visibility.” —Aleks Peterson, Technology Analyst, TechnologyAdvice “80% of your business profits come from a mere 20% of your activity. In other words, most of your regular business activities don’t benefit your bottom line. Here are a few specific tips for working smarter, not harder: 1. Learn to delegate. Focus on the areas of your business you’re the strongest in, and delegate the rest. 2. Remember that time is money. Actually, time is more important than money. You can make more money, but not more time. Stop wasting time on business activities that don’t make you money. 3. Build a tribe. By building a loyal base of customers and raving fans, you can spend less time on shameless self promotion because they’ll do a lot of the work for you.” —Blair Nastasi, Founder, Media Moguls PR “Focus on sound growth & autonomy. It's an election year, and the economy and jobs outlook appears solid, and I believe 2016 will be looked back upon as an inflection point. Those that focus on the fundamentals and establishing a strong base to weather future macroeconomic headwinds will be well positioned.” —Mike Trevino, CEO, Indigenous Software For customer retention “Ask the questions around how well your company keeps customers. New sales are great (“Get the check”), but repeat sales (“Keep the check”) are where you make your money. Don’t believe me? Look at your average cost of acquisition and your average profit and see how long it takes to make your money back on a new sale. Profit is not made on the new sale. It happens by keeping customers on the books, paying you. Focus on retention and watch your profits accelerate.” —Lou Altman, CEO & Lead Trainer, Next Level “Prioritize how to increase the long-term value of customers. It’s very expensive to acquire a customer, and a lot less expensive to retain them. The success of businesses comes from a combination of great customer service and a focus on how to generate additional revenue from current customers. If companies learn how to do this well, they will create lifetime customers, a good source of referrals, and independent advocates on behalf of the company. If your business is already doing this, focus on ways to improve this process.” —Deborah Sweeney, CEO, My Corporation In marketing “Exercise creativity when it comes to your marketing efforts. As paid search and organic search channels become increasingly competitive and expensive, it’s important that organizations think outside of the box to get in front of quality prospects. Whether it’s understanding how to leverage Reddit to promote content, or understanding how you can use Pinterest to increase lead flow, 2016 is the year companies should focus on taking advantage of the marketing opportunities that their competition haven’t yet quite figured out.” —Clayton Dean, Co-Founder, Circa Interactive “In your outreach and marketing for 2016, make a point to [inlinetweet prefix="" tweeter="" suffix="—via @Wrike"]connect with your customers and potential customers on a personal level.[/inlinetweet] Look for messaging and share motivations that make your story resonate with fanatics, then turn those fanatics into your own personal sales force.” —Chris Ricci, Indigenous Software “Prioritize video content in 2016. It is a great way to give your brand more of a personality. There are also a lot of great ways to promote your content through Google and Facebook that can help bring your business to new heights.” —Jason Parks, Owner, The Media Captain In data, tracking and analytics “Whether it's tracking customer behavior in a store or implementing goal funnels in Google analytics, [inlinetweet prefix="" tweeter="" suffix="—via @Wrike"]obtaining and making decisions on clean data has never been more important.[/inlinetweet] Many businesses believe their dataset is clean, but in reality the data needs to be filtered and organized to be a true vehicle for decision making.” —Orun Bhuiyan, Marketing Technologist, SEOcial “1. Evaluate how data is used to improve decision making and processes. 2. If data collection is a problem, resolution to put good collection and outreach mechanisms into place. 3. If data processing is a problem, resolution to get the right minds and systems into place. There is no organization on the face of the planet that could not better harness past experience to produce better future outcomes. Let's make that the goal for 2016.” —Trevor Ewen, Pear of the Week In talent acquisition “Improve your ability to identify and develop highly talented leaders for the future.” —Larry Sternberg, President, Talent Plus, Inc. In information security “In an age when hacking is becoming too commonplace, businesses should invest resources into safeguarding themselves and mitigating the risk of a future disaster. This may range from teaching staff about basic security practices to ensuring a website isn't vulnerable to conventional attacks.” —Orun Bhuiyan, Marketing Technologist, SEOcial What will you be focusing on in 2016? Are you taking up any of these suggested business resolutions for 2016, or has your company already set different priorities for the new year? Wrike Named to Deloitte's 2015 Technology Fast 500™

Last week, at an awards reception in Mountain View, Deloitte released its 2015 Technology Fast 500™ and named Wrike the 116th fastest growing company in North America. Hooray! The Technology Fast 500™ is an annual ranking of the 500 fastest growing North American companies in the technology, media, telecommunications, life sciences and energy tech sectors. Awardees are selected based on percentage fiscal year revenue growth from 2011 to 2014. Wrike grew 778% during this period and ranks as the 116th fastest growing company overall. Of the more than 50 Bay Area software companies on the list, Wrike ranked within the top 12. Peer companies in the overall software category include Zendesk, Workday, Box, Marketo, and Splunk. Our CEO and founder, Andrew Filev, credits Wrike’s ranking to the growing need for enterprise to adapt new flexible, scalable solutions for increasingly collaborative digital work, as well as the growth in global and virtual teams for the company’s sharp revenue increase. Wrike is now sold in 120 countries and 10 languages and adding new regions every month. Thanks to Deloitte for this distinguished award. We're proud to be a part of the #Fast500! Highlights from Web Summit 2015 in Dublin

Our CEO and founder Andrew Filev has just returned from Web Summit 2015 hosted in Dublin, Ireland. It was a super-energetic and frenetic gathering of 40,000+ people, including inspiring tech leaders and speakers from around the globe.     Wrike CEO Andrew Filev being interviewed at Web Summit, Dublin A photo posted by Eliza (@e_dubs11) on Nov 7, 2015 at 4:14pm PST   What Wrike Shared at Web Summit 2015 During a lively discussion at the fully packed Startup University Stage with Upwork CEO Stephane Kasriel and Fast Company contributor Ross Kingsland, Andrew spoke on hiring for startups and what’s working for today’s companies. Andrew shared insights into hiring in a very competitive environment where small startups must compete against tech giants like Facebook and Google for talent. His main piece of advice for startups: [inlinetweet prefix="" tweeter="" suffix="@wrike"]"Find what makes your company a unique and compelling proposition, and compete on that."[/inlinetweet] You may not be able outcompete Google with Google-like offerings (those snacks are pretty darn good!), but not everyone is looking for a Google-size company. Many candidates are keen to make a big difference at the early stage of a company. Determine what makes your company different and awesome, and look for people who want to be part of the vision and mission you are creating. In light of the conference, Irish Tech News published a full interview with Andrew on how to hire. You can read it here.   If you attended Web Summit 2015, share your top takeaway from the conference in the comments below. We want to learn from you! New Reports: Real-Time Insights with One Click

According to our 2015 Work Management Survey of over 1,400 office workers, the greatest cause of work-related stress is “missing information”; 52% of participants rank this as causing “high” or “very high” stress for them. What's more, almost half (46%) said most or all of their meetings were focused on just status updates. This lack of visibility not only causes stress for workers, but also leads to project failure and delays. On average, it costs companies over $100 million for every $1 billion spent on projects per year. But we believe it can be better! That's why we're so excited to bring you our newest feature: Wrike Reports. Instead of spending hours gathering data and crunching numbers, you can now just click a button to quickly visualize all work statuses and progress in easy-to-digest formats, giving you the visibility and insight you need to run your business. How Beta Clients Are Already Using Reports We've spent most of this year exploring, interviewing, and beta testing with clients just like you to find out what they're struggling with as they manage work. Interestingly, we found most people encounter the same challenges regardless of industry. People spend hours gathering info for status updates while managers still struggle to get the big picture view of where everything stands, what is going well, and what is at risk. "I need a simple report of how busy my team is, so I know where to schedule the next project" was a resounding call. So we set off to build Reports, an easy to use reporting engine that gives you the ability to create custom reports to get to the insights you need. Reports simplify the ability to instantly gather accurate, up-to-the-minute project status information, and then share that info with the people who need to take action. You are able to easily get to the big picture, and also drill down into the details when needed. Gone are the days of relying on infrequent, manually collected updates in order to know where work stands! Some of the most commonly used reports during the beta program were: Weekly Exec Update: Understand the number and status of projects by owner Team Performance: Compare the performance of individuals by key metrics Activity Reports: Understand how the team is using Wrike Accomplishments: Report on the work completed last week, month, or quarter Giving You Back An Entire Workday When reporting from a work management tool instead of manually collected updates, you can slice-and-dice the data to find insights that were previously inaccessible or took hours to reach. Since all your work is already in Wrike, you can start every day with a birds-eye view of what each person on your team is doing, where every project stands, and thus, where you need to jump in to assist. That brings real confidence in your team's performance. We found that by using real-time Reports, a typical marketing team of 10 can save at least 10-15 hours per week on status updates and account management work, effectively giving you back an entire workday. See a problem? Drill down to quickly find the cause. Need to see the status of all your projects at a glance? We've got you covered. Want to report on what the team accomplished last month? It's 3 simple steps to get real time status of your data in beautiful charts and graphs. Stay tuned for new charts and graphs coming soon! Wrike’s real-time reporting is now available to all Wrike Enterprise customers. Whether you're an expert or you've never touched Wrike at all, you can try out Reports for your team now by starting a free trial of Wrike Enterprise. We hope you enjoy working with Reports, and that they provide you even more visibility into work, save time, and help you make smarter and more informed decisions. We are always eager to hear your feedback — please leave your thoughts in the comments!

Welcome Wrike Graphite: Reshaping the Experience of Online Project Collaboration

In the past couple of weeks, we have been teasing you with sneak previews of the new features we had in store. But there’s a big thing that we have kept secret up until now. These were not all separate feature releases that we were putting our efforts into, but part of Wrike’s new user interface. The trumpets ring, the curtain falls… and here comes the much anticipated moment when we’re proud to introduce Wrike Graphite! What you’ll immediately see in Wrike Graphite is the new look of the interface. What we targeted is making the design neat, clear and very lightweight. We know that when it comes to daily productivity, it’s the little things that matter. Pure, contrast palette, restyled folder tree, intuitive icons, and more – we hope that each of these details will make it even easier for you to navigate Wrike and spot all the necessary project info in your workspace. Besides rethinking the design, Wrike Graphite goes much further. While we were creating magic with this new version, what we had in mind was no less than reshaping the whole experience of working online together! Function-wise, one of the core components in this shift is a built-in timer which doesn’t only track your work time with pinpoint precision, but also broadcasts your work  progress to the team. A typical online work scenario is usually very transactional – one colleague asks a direct question, another one answers him. It gives you laser focus on the details you need, but this pattern misses the benefits of accidental interactions that we enjoy in the real world. The model of "management by walking around", however funny this title sounds, helped many successful leaders, such as Steve Jobs, to be very effective. Wrike has been delivering this concept through easy info sharing, a flexible model of task following, and convenient real-time notifications on the web, in email, and on mobile. In Wrike Graphite, we made another big step in this direction: with literally one click on the play button of the timer, you start subtly broadcasting to your team what you are working on. It's a push-pull model, which means that you're not imposing this info to your colleagues, but if they "walk by", they'll know what you're working on and will be able to contribute, if necessary. For people who work across the building, country, or globe this is transformative for their online work experience. Along the same lines of making project management more approachable and simple, we rethought the process of scheduling tasks and setting dependencies between them. When you have a clear vision of how tasks are connected to each other, you can easily build this sequence right from the new task view. Just as easily, you can later reschedule these tasks, or get the full picture of your projects on the timeline. We know that sometimes every second counts, so we added another powerful feature - HTML5 desktop notifications. Thanks to them, your team will be able to react to comments and approach new tasks the moment they arise. Last, but not least, we put extra effort into making your e-mail experience even better. This time we've redesigned and improved email notifications. We’ve added the familiar patterns you enjoy in Wrike’s Activity Stream, so that these interactions become more collaborative and you - more productive. As you can see, the magic mix of Wrike Graphite includes a lot of big and small updates that have one goal in common - make a positive difference in your day-to-day work. In our coming posts we’ll take a detailed tour of the key new features, so that you and your team can make the most of them. Can’t wait to see the new Wrike Graphite in action? Simply enable it for your workspace in Wrike Labs right now! Important note: The old user interface will be disabled for all users on September 30, 2013. We wanted to make sure that you have plenty of time to get adjusted to the new Wrike. Keep in mind, our customer care team is always there to help you with any questions or concerns that you might have!

What's Changing on the PMP Examination This November 2015?

What's Changing on the PMP Examination This November 2015?

UPDATE: The PMP exam update has been postponed till January 11th, 2016 to allow all examinees adequate time to prepare for the change. See the full announcement on the PMI website. Those aspiring to get their Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, take note: there will be changes to the PMP examination which will go into effect this November 2015. So if you're studying for the PMP exam with older material (i.e. the Exam Content Outline dated August 2011), you have until November 1st to use those materials and take the exam. After that date, the new PMP exam will be instated and you'll have to upgrade to the new Exam Content Outline (dated June 2015). Why is the PMP Exam Changing? The PMP exam is being updated because the role of the project manager continues to evolve. The exam is meant to reflect current practices. In fact, PMP certification exams are updated every three to five years to ensure they stay relevant for project managers. To update exams, a Role Delineation Study (RDS) is undertaken to examine the role of of the project manager and distill it down to key competency areas, such as domains, tasks, knowledge, and skills. The research done in the RDS is then validated by the larger PM community. In order to maintain certification as a PMP, you'll need a specific number of Professional Development Units (PDU). 60 PDUs are required over the course of three years, which can be earned by attending events, or accomplishing courses. What Was Updated? Here's a quick rundown: Overall, there are minor changes to terminology and language within many tasks. While the essence of these tasks remains the same, the language has been modified to fit current practice in the industry. A few tasks were removed from the prior version of the Exam Content Outline. Because they were dropped, the new PMP exam will not include related questions. The 5 domain areas remain the same, but there are shifts in how each area is weighted, meaning a corresponding change in the number of questions pertaining to each domain. For example: Domain 3 "Executing" has increased to 31%; this means there will be more questions on domain 3 than the previous version of the exam. The biggest change is the introduction of eight new tasks to the Exam Content Outline. See the chart below. Domain 1 has three new tasks (Task 2, 7 and 8), Domain 2 has one new task (Task 13), Domain 3 has two new tasks (Task 6 and 7), and Domain 4 has two new tasks (Task 6 and 7). To view all the changes in detail, see the latest Exam Content Outline (June 2015). Why Were These Changes Made? 1. To Focus More on Business Benefits & Benefits Realization There is an increased focus on business benefits, strategy, and benefits realization. This is because project managers are now being brought in at the earliest stages of projects when benefits analysis is conducted. Today's PMs often need ensure that the project focuses on business benefits rather than just delivering on time. 2. To Ensure Lessons are Learned Throughout the Project Lifecycle Another topic with added emphasis is lessons learned. Traditionally, PMs only discuss lessons learned during the initiation phase (lessons learned from past projects) and then again during the closing phase (lessons learned on this project). The focus is now on gleaning lessons learned throughout the entire project lifecycle. 3. To Reflect Who Really Creates the Project Charter The consensus now is that it's typically NOT the project manager who is solely responsible for creating the project charter. Instead, it's the sponsor or customer who creates and approves the project charter, while the PM acts as a contributor to its development and informs team members and other stakeholders about its contents. Parts of the exam were changed to reflect this shift. 4. To Underscore the Importance of Stakeholder Relationships Everyone now agrees that project managers build two-way relationships with stakeholders, instead of simply sending one-way communications and updates. The exam changes now place a greater emphasis on managing and engaging stakeholder relationships to effectively complete a project. What These Changes Mean Overall for the PMP Exam Expect to see 25% of the exam content cover new topic areas from those 8 added tasks. Also, expect a large percentage of the rest of the exam questions to be new and updated. Some things are not changing. The eligibility requirements remain the same: every PMP candidate needs to have 4,500 to 7,500 hours of experience in leading and managing projects, and should also have a total of 35 hours of formal project management education. The overall structure also remains the same. The PMP exam will still be made up of 200 multiple choice, scenario-based questions. How Are These Changes Affecting You? Are you taking the PMP exam soon? We'd like to hear how these changes are affecting your exam preparations. Are you already a PMP? What do you think of these changes? Drop us a comment below.

10 Hot Industries for Tech Startups in 2015

The new year often brings fresh beginnings, career resolutions, renewed focus — and new business ventures. If you've been dreaming of becoming an entrepreneur, perhaps this is the year you've finally resolved to launch your own company. If so, be sure to take a look at these 10 industries where business is booming. 1. Internet of Things  Thermostats that learn your daily habits. Wifi security cameras you control with your cell phone. Doorbells that recognize your face. The Internet of Things includes all consumer devices that connect to networks, and Gartner estimates there will be 26 billion units installed by 2020. By that time, IoT product and supplier revenue will top $300 billion. And between 2013 - 2022, the industry is projected to generate $14.4 trillion net profit globally. 2. Education Technology  EdTech workers design and produce online classes, tutorials, help centers, and training programs for all levels of education, from pre-K to higher ed. In 2013, e-Learning was a $56.2 billion industry, and it will double that in 2015. The industry as a whole boasts a 4.4% annual growth rate, and cloud-based learning solutions are especially popular with a 9% growth rate. 3. Mobile Apps  From addictive games and social networks to business and productivity tools, the mobile apps industry is showing no signs of slowing its upward trend. The number of downloads from the Apple App store alone has reached $85 billion, and global spending is projected to hit $35 billion in 2015. 4. Wearable Tech  Smartwatches. Google Glass. Fitness trackers. Wearable technology is designed to monitor everything from our sleep cycles to our daily appointments, and the trend is spreading fast. The global wearable technology market is expected to grow a whopping 40.8% annually, becoming a $5.8 billion industry by 2018. 5. Business Apps The proliferation of mobile devices means three things: more people are working on the go, more companies are adopting "Bring Your Own Device” policies, and more organizations are embracing remote workers. All of this has led to the rise of cloud-based SaaS companies offering business apps that help teams work together from anywhere, on any device. Gartner predicts Enterprise software spending will grow 7.3% in 2015 to reach $344 billion. 6. Mobile Health  Mobile Health (mHealth) involves using mobile devices and networks to support medical care in both developed and developing countries. The demand for affordable and accessible healthcare continues to grow, and more and more healthcare professionals are carrying smartphones in their pockets. As a result, the mobile health market is expected to increase from $14.5 billion in 2015 to $58.8 billion in 2020. 7. Automated Guided Vehicles Think robot forklifts. These machines automate warehousing logistics, like retrieving products to fulfill orders and preparing shipments to be loaded onto delivery vehicles. AGVs are spreading through numerous big industries, like pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food, automotive, and warehousing — essentially, any business that requires transportation of materials. 8. Digital Detectives Ever dropped your phone in the toilet? Or lost your laptop? So much data gets lost, corrupted, or stolen (just ask Sony, Target, and eBay). Digital detectives work to recover that data, or protect it from being illegally accessed. Companies that can assist investigations into phishing and bank fraud schemes or other criminal cases will be in high demand, as will the ability to recover sensitive data from jeopardized devices and networks. 9. Big Data Analytics Although big data has been a buzzword since 2010, most companies are still pretty overwhelmed by it. Tools that can help distill big data to better understand customers and inform business strategies will continue to be in high demand in the coming years. With the emerging Internet of Things, a corresponding "Analytics of Things" market will also grow, and the big data and analytics market is projected to reach $125 billion worldwide in 2015. 10. Mobile Payments It's been a long time since smartphones were primarily used to make calls. Mobile devices have become multi-tools, infiltrating nearly every aspect of our business and personal lives. The next stage of that is the convenience of digital payments. Mobile payments are projected to grow 60% worldwide through 2015, reaching 47 billion transactions. Why Social Media is a Top Priority for CMOs in 2015 (Infographic)

It's no secret that social media has permanently altered the marketing landscape. But eight years after Facebook opened its doors to businesses, many marketers are still trying to perfect their strategies and learn how to expertly navigate both emerging and established networks. According to a recent survey, this isn't likely to change in the coming year: social media is dominating CMOs' priorities for 2015. These three factors are driving CMOs' focus on social media:  87% of CMOs say social media is the most engaging medium for real-time content, over video and blogs. As a result, CMOs are devoting a full 21.4% of their total marketing budgets to social media efforts. Respondents admit social media is poorly integrated with their overall marketing strategy. (3.85 on a scale from 1-7.) Curious about how budgets are shifting from traditional to digital marketing this year? Or how content, analytics, and consulting fit into CMO plans for 2015?
