Do Agile Project Managers Need to Be Certified?

Andrew Filev , Wednesday, March 09, 2011 comment Comments (17)
Last week, PMI announced the launch of its new certification for agile project managers. Those who want to get a PMI agile certificate will have to pass a challenging exam to prove they are able to apply agile methodologies on a professional level. PMI will start accepting applications in May 2011. The Institute reports that the new certification was developed by established agile practitioners and is based on reliable ways to assess competence. You can learn more about the new certification and eligibility requirements at www.pmi.org.

Other organizations, like the Agile Alliance, have offered their own agile certifications before. But the Project Management Institute, with more than half a million members and credential holders in 185 countries, is definitely the most influential organization in the project management space, so it’s pleasing to see PMI now officially recognizing agile as a significant and undeniable trend in project management.

Andrew Filev , Tuesday, July 14, 2009 comment Comments (5)
People often ask me to advise them on the best resources that will help them deepen their project management knowledge or start their own project management journey. One of Wrike’s clients recently asked me: “I’ve been given the green light to seek out any useful resources in the field of Project Management to further my professional development. I’ve Googled a few things, but can’t really decipher what would be beneficial vs. a waste. I was wondering if you might be able to point me in the right direction and recommend  particular books or seminars that I could look into?”

I thought that it would be better to post my reply here, so that more people could take advantage of the advice.

In one of my recent posts I wrote that using project management 2.0 software helps project manager guide his team’s work, delegate some of his initial duties and allocate roles and responsibilities so that they are clear to everybody on the team. Project management 2.0 tools also let one apply some traditional methodologies of structuring responsibilities more effectively. Let’s take RACI as an example.

Scrum in marketing: making enterprises adaptive

Andrew Filev , Tuesday, November 27, 2007 comment Comments (4)
Every year and even every month, new technologies, markets and competitors spring up, and today’s businesses have to be agile to be able to face the impending challenges. In such an unstable environment, traditional principles of managing product development may lead companies to failure. If the product requirements change drastically from the time the product is designed to the moment when it is released, it can result in the delivery of outdated products. Otherwise, ineffective change management processes may destroy product development, and the product will never be delivered.

How Do Enterprise 2.0 Technologies Make Companies More Agile?

Andrew Filev , Saturday, September 29, 2007 comment Comments (0)
Organizational change experts stress the need to develop agile companies. Major Enterprise 2.0 theorists say that new-generation technologies can turn inflexible companies into agile and efficient organizations. They praise social software for optimizing management and overall company activity.

Future threats and opportunities become harder to predict, and emerging challenges include increasingly novel elements. Today’s businesses are affected by globalization processes, and enterprises often become bigger, therefore more inflexible and bureaucratic. As organizations grow into huge corporations, it gets more difficult for them to react to constant market changes fast enough. This results in an ongoing agility gap.
